Here's a link to an interview with Leonard Lopate on WNYC. I did my best to convince him to give diving a try.
Nowhere in the world can you get closer to wildlife than you can in the ocean. A Year Underwater takes you there, within inches of squadrons of squid, seven-foot sharks, 20-pound lobsters, and myriad creatures living in minuscule worlds almost too small to see.
Between New Year’s Day and New Year’s Eve of 2015, I dove up and down the East Coast of North America, through winter storms and summer heat waves. A Year Underwater is my record of that year: of creatures mating, spawning, hiding and making meals of one another, all within a stone’s throw of the beach. This is a book for anyone who loves the feel of the ocean, or who’s ever looked at it and wondered what was happening beneath the surface.

You can't be a good guy if you're afraid to get dirty!
I've written three books, the newest being A Year Underwater. My writing and photography have also appeared in hundreds of publications worldwide, including such magazines as Audubon, Wired and National Geographic Adventure. I write mainly about the ocean, which I've been looking at it and wondering what was happening underneath the surface for as long as I can remember. My specialty is writing about and photographing creatures that live within steps of the shoreline. There's nothing I love as much as spending time on, under, or near the water with family and friends, and I hope to keep doing so well into my hundreds. I currently live in Somerville, MA with my stunning wife Daisy, our incredible son Zeke, and our singing dog Romi.
